THE TOP 10 Defensemen IN THE WORLD...ACCORDING TO SUFI

SUFYAN JAWED

AUGUST 23rd, 2022

This series of articles will rank the top 10 players at each position in the NHL. My process will consist of my personal view of the player, their production, and their skill level based on both the eye test and analytics. Based on a mix of their last few seasons and how I think they’ll play next year. This is only one man's opinion, and it is inevitable that disagreements will happen. But I’ll do my best to explain why I have players where I do. I’ll also put my favorite play from each player from this past year.

10: Thomas Chabot - Ottawa Senators - Age: 25

2021-2021 Season Stats:

Thomas Chabot is a workhorse. And he has honestly been significantly overworked. Since the 2019-2020 season he is first in the NHL with 26:09 ATOI and this includes a night where he played 37:50 in a regular season overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2019. I am a firm believer that him being overworked sometimes affects his decision making late in games and it hinders his ability to reach an even higher level. For the sake of him and the Senators I hope that one of their many prospects can reach a high enough level to take some of the load off of Chabot. Skill-wise Chabot has one of the best deking abilities at his position in the NHL that is rivaled by only Cale Makar in terms of defencemen. When he carries the puck from his own zone there is a good chance that his team enters the offensive zone by way of him carrying the puck in or via his passing ability. If Chabot’s workload ever decreases even a bit I am sure we will see a breakout season offensively, especially with the team improving around him.

9. John Carlson - Washington Capitals - Age 32

2021-2021 Season Stats:

John Carlson has somehow become underrated. He is still among the NHL’s best offensively, and he checks out defensively as well by way of analytics. The issue with Carlson is that he has been susceptible to lapses of judgment, and when that happens it can lead to some unfortunate turnovers or bad-positioning. But that stuff is few and far between and unfortunately gets magnified which over-shadows all the positive things that he does do. Carlson’s In-zone offense is among the NHLs best when it comes to defencemen and he plays high-levarge situations and performs well in those situations. His offensive stats are also hard to beat the past few seasons. Since 2018-2019, he ranks first in points among defencemen with 260, while being second in goals and PPP among defensemen in that same timespan. Carlson has a blistering and accurate shot and he often releases it on the powerplay when all the attention is on Ovechkin. He has shown no signs of slowing down and there is no reason to assume that he will be doing so this year.

8: Devon Toews - Colorado Avalanche - Age: 28

2021-2021 Season Stats:

Devon Toews broke out in a big way last season after being one of the NHLs most underrated defenseman for a couple of seasons. Playing with NHLs best defenceman likely helps his cause, but Toews is individually just as big of a part on that line. His defensive ability allows Makar to be a little more creative with the puck and have a little bit more risk to him because he has Toews to back him up defensively. Toews is not a regular hulking defensive D-man that plays with an offensive superstar like Makar. Toews specializes in using his skating ability to suppress scoring chances and the second he retrieves the puck it is quickly out of the zone as he is one of the NHLs best breakout passers. With all of that being said, Toews showed some offensive prowess in his game last season as well given that he had the 9th best points per game among defencemen. He managed to use that skating ability in the offensive zone and also seems to have found a bit of a scoring touch as well with 13 goals in 66 games. Toews was a steal for Colorado and he will form a tantalizing pairing with Makar for years to come.

7: Aaron Ekblad - Florida Panthers - Age: 26

2021-2021 Season Stats:

I think people forget that defenders sometimes take a little longer to hit their full potential. They can’t be Makar. Ekblad has now lived up to the high expectations that comes with being a first overall pick and has developed into a player that can dominate in every situation. He is one of the best defenders in the league at 5 on 5 and has become one of the better PP QBs in the league because of his heavy shot and elite passing ability. He is an elite contributor when it comes to goal scoring from the back end and he has been for a while. Since 2015/2016 he is 6th in goals amongst defenseman. The most important thing about him is that similar to Victor Hedman, he doesn’t rely on his size to defend. What I mean by that is that there are defenders that are seen as defensive D-men simply because they are physical and can remove players from the puck with their body. For someone like Ekblad he focuses on gap control and making sure that he suppresses scoring chances before using his physicality to finish off a play. Ekblad is without a doubt a game-changing D-man.

6: Charlie McAvoy - Boston Bruins - Age:24

2021-2021 Season Stats:

I am extremely jealous of the Boston Bruins for having a player with McAvoy skillset on their team. McAvoy is Elite in the defensive zone in all areas, for example suppressing scoring chances both off the rush and in-zone defense. He is elite physically. He is elite at creating scoring chances. He is elite at breaking the puck out whether via pass or carry. He is just everything one would want in a number 1 defenceman and I don’t think I am the only guy that envies the Bruins for having this guy. This isn’t much more that I can say about him.

5: Jaccob Slavin - Carolina Hurricanes - Age:28

2021-2021 Season Stats:

Slavin's impact defensively rivals the offensive impact of any player out there. He has been undoubtedly the best defensive-defenseman the last few years and somehow his offensive play-driving is among the best as well. Slavin’s presence improves the whole team. His ability to stop opposing players from creating chances before they are even able to is unmatched. He clogs the neutral to the point where almost every player coming towards him dumps it in because the have little faith in themselves to get past him, and they are proven right if they ever try to. Slavin has no problems when he has the puck on his stick either. He is a very strong passer and always seems to make the right play which in turn suppresses even more scoring chances from happening. His defense compares to Mcdavid's offensive ability. He has potentially the best defensive stick in the NHL whether it is to block a pass or poke check, and his defensive reads are rarely ever the wrong one.

4: Roman Josi - Nashville Predators - Age: 32

2021-2021 Season Stats:

Roman Josi had the best pure offensive defenseman season we have seen in a long time. Nearing almost 100 points as a defenseman in the NHL is obscene. The only reason he is not in the top 3 is because he did sacrifice quite a bit defensively in order to gain that offensive edge. I do think it is the product of Nashville generally being a mediocre team offensively in recent years, and the way Josi played this season rejuvenated their offense to the point where it revived the careers of a few of their veteran forwards. His more offensive-minded game influenced Nashville positively as a whole for that reason because they have enough defensively competent players to make up for any thing he sacrificed defensively. He used his elite skating ability and passing to produce at an otherworldly rate, he took more risks but the majority worked out and that is why ended up with as many points as he did.

3: Adam Fox - New York Rangers - Age: 24

2021-2021 Season Stats:

Adam Fox is as elite as it gets, his presence on the rangers blue-line is scary especially with the other offensive talents on that team and the menace in net. Fox’s offensive game is carried by his elite offensive awareness and knowing when to step up or hold back. He shows no hesitation in his decisions and whatever decisions he makes with or without the puck are normally correct. In the last two seasons Fox has 121 points in 133 games and he likely will not slow down especially with the team around him. His defensive ability is underrated and although he is hindered by his size he prevents scoring chances at a decent rate and is one of the best breakout passers in the league. Fox is going to be one of the best defensemen in the league for the next decade and his first few seasons have already been incredibly special.

2: Victor Hedman - Tampa Bay Lightning - Age: 32

2021-2021 Season Stats:

Victor Hedman is going to be a first ballot hall of famer, with a Norris, Conn Smythe and 2 Stanley Cups already in the bag and the numbers to back up his play. Whether it is surface stats, eye test or analytics, Hedman checks all the boxes. For a guy as big as he is he uses his body in an unconventional way for a player of that size. He is as tough as it gets in terms of 1 on 1 in-zone defense, and it does not always cause an over-power physical trait. Hedman uses his stick as well as anyone to jar pucks loose as well as intercept passes and break-up plays

On the offensive side of things Hedman is one of the best at breakout passing and he uses that ability to set up rush opportunities for that high-octane offense in Tampa. That ability also helps him rack up power-play assists and he is the major catalyst on their PP as their QB, everything goes through him at the blueline. Stat-wise, amongst defensemen since 2013-14, just to show the longevity, Hedman ranks 2nd in points, 3rd in goals, 1st in assists, 2nd in PPP and 2nd in points per game (Min 300 GP). In that same time span he also ranks 1st in points amongst Defensemen in the playoffs. No doubt, future Hall of Famer.

1: Cale Makar - Colorado Avalanche - Age: 23

2021-2021 Season Stats:

There are few players that have been as polarizing right from their entrance into the league as Makar has been in his first 3 seasons, maybe McDavid, Ovechkin or Crosby to name a few. He has cemented himself, as one of those generational talents that defies their age and rises to the top as quickly as possible. What is the most impressive thing about Makar’s rise is he seems to be overshadowing a team full of stars in Colorado. It speaks volumes that in their playoff run he was undoubtedly the team’s best and most-valuable player.

It is almost impossible to pinpoint Makar’s greatest skill. We can start with his skating ability because it seems to be the most talked about. Makar is a special skater, he has top notch straight line speed, but his agility is what makes him different. And he uses that to be even more effective in every part of his game.

For example, he uses his agility and speed to create space for himself to let go of his lethal shot.

But then on top of that he uses his skating to get to parts of the ice that draws defenders to him and then he can use his playmaking ability to create a chance for his teammates:

It’s almost Mcdavid-esque, how every player on the ice is drawn to Makar, and watching Makar, and in order to stop him, you kind of have to keep an eye on him. The only problem is that he is a double edged sword, and if you get drawn to him, he has no problem passing it right through you.

Speaking of Mcdavid this play encapsulates in one short video why he is the best defenseman in the league. It is because he also uses that skating ability to play sublime defense. He suppresses rush chances extremely well and his defensive positioning is among the best, like he does here against Mcdavid

At the end of the day, like Mcdavid, the dazzling highlight reel plays are what most casual fans will notice which may not be the worst thing. Having exciting young generational talents never should be a bad thing.

It's hard to choose which plays to include so here is another one for fun.
